Best of British

To complement its new and recently published Catalogue of British Pictures, Dulwich Picture Gallery will be exhibiting the best of its British paintings this summer in a captivating exhibition telling the unique story of its British Collection. Masterpieces from the original bequests will be displayed alongside lesser-known paintings bequeathed by collectors other than the Gallery’s founders, including a significant group of actors’ portraits from the time of Shakespeare. This is the first time that many of these pictures have been shown together in the same room and will include several usually hidden from public eyes. Following a chronological sequence the exhibition will chart the bequests by important collectors from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, offering fascinating insights into British notions of taste and the fashion to collect.

How tragic. Such promise of youth. James Lourie Bellingham, WA

What a fantastic exhibition - I had know idea Dulwich had an even bigger collection than just those normally on display.

What a great review in the Guardian. It made me rush to Dulwich straight away - what with that and the Antiques Roadshow - you can't escape - Dulwich Picture Gallery is everywhere... and what an interesting collection of British pictures - most of which are never shown because though the Exhibition is called Best of British, some of the pictures aren't that wonderful - though of course some really are the best of British, all those great Gainsboroughs etc. But for a viewer it's just interesting to see the various collections that have been added to the original collection that was formed for the king of Poland. So it's visually interesting and stimulating in a historic way too. great stuff! good luck for your anniversary year 2011. signed hopper cropper
